Hazmat called in for propane tanker accident

On Jan. 24, at 12:30 p.m., Officers responded to a single vehicle crash of a 2007, International, 54,000-pound propane tanker truck. The crash location was on SR 616, near North Rohrbaugh Rd., Seven Valleys, North Codorus Twp.

The driver, Thomas Myers of Dillsburg, Pa., of AmeriGas of York, advised that he was southbound, entering a decline of the roadway, when the truck drifted off the road surface at a bend in the roadway. The vehicle came to a rest on its side against an embankment. The rear tandem wheels came off of the truck as it came to rest. The propane tank was not damaged and therefore no gas leaked from the vehicle.

Other propane trucks responded to the location so that the propane contents could be off-loaded; a process that was required prior to the truck being righted and removed from the scene. For safety reasons, one nearby residence was asked to leave their home while the gas was being removed from the truck.

The roadway was closed for approximately 6 hours but fire police personnel from Seven Valleys and North Codorus Fire assisted in detouring traffic around the scene. York County HAZMAT fire personnel were also on the scene in an effort to stabilize and secure the gas.
